Ripponden in Bloom Newsletter November 2012

November 2012        This month
Wow another wet month. What a brilliant group of workers we have turning out in all the awful weather.

This month we have planted 104 saplings as part of a Jubilee wood sponsored by the Woodland Trust. We applied for and got a wild harvest pack consisting of; Hazel, Blackthorn, Crab Apple, Elder and Dog Rose plus 1 Jubilee Oak.

All the saplings with the exception of the Jubilee Oak have been planted in the area known as Hirstwood Holme on the river bank behind the doctor’s surgery – accessed at the side of the Old Bridge Inn. Thanks to the Parish Council and Calderdale for allowing us to plant them there.

16 people turned out to help along with 7 Rishworth students. The area had to be cleared first and then the sapling planted, tied onto a cane and protected by a plastic bottle.

We have done more clearing and tidying so most places look clean and tidy for the winter.

Calendar 2013

Still available from:

Urchin Kids, Toll House, Ripponden Fish Bar, Ripponden Post Office, Amelia, The Plant Mill, Far Barsey, and Triangle and Barkisland Post Office.

They make great Christmas presents and thank you gifts.

To all our supporters, we are taking December off to rest but will be back in January, weather permitting.
Thank you to everyone and have a superb Christmas from all at Ripponden in Bloom.

Ripponden in Bloom Newsletter October 2012

This month

A huge thank you to all those who turned out this month to help us clear and plant up for the spring. A mammoth job made easier by many hands.

Rishworth students came and helped cut back the ivy on the wall at Mill Fold, filling 18 sacks and making it look much smarter. They then tackled the banking in Royd Lane car park to clear weeds ready for the spring bulbs to come through.

At the same time a team took apart the planters at the bus stop and replaced one which was broken. The compost was replaced. A week later, in the pouring rain, students from Calderdale college came and helped plant up all the railing
baskets with over 144 pansies and Tête-à-Têtes ready for a good spring show.

Calendar 2013

These are selling well – please support the group and buy a calendar. They are now on sale at £5.50 each or two for £10.

Ripponden in Bloom Newsletter

July 2012

This month
The jubilee stone has been hoisted into position at Jubilee Gardens. Funded by a grant from the Community Foundation for Calderdale it makes a striking commemoration for the Diamond Jubilee. It has been carved by Brian Brooks from BD Brooks in the village.

Grant
The group has been given a £200 grant from Townson Thornber from their Bursary Scheme for us to buy plants and gifts for our tombola stall at Rushbearing.

Police Help
We were delighted to receive many pots, canes and liquid feed, from the Police. These were the proceeds of crime during Policing in Calderdale and are shared around in bloom groups throughout the area.

Yorkshire In Bloom
Thanks to all our superb volunteers who turned out to make the village spick and span for the judging. It went down really well take a look at some of the superb barrels around the village well done to all who manage them.

Can You Help?

Do you have any unwanted brick-a-brac which we could make use of on our Prize Every Time Tombola at Rushbearing? If you have anything we could use just ring one of the committee and we will arrange to collect. Thank you.

June Newsletter

This month
The horticultural students from Calderdale College came and replanted the railing baskets for us. We have added some wooden edging to the gravel at the Jubilee Gardens to tidy this area and it has greatly improved it. The group supported the library to have a children’s day to plant 5 ‘pots of colour’ to represent the Olympic rings, these can be seen outside the library. The group organised a photographic competition at the library for children to be judged on their open day on 30th June.

Vandals Strike
Sadly we have been hit by vandals again, they took the vast majority of the summer bedding from the two barrels at the bus stop and they also took the blue plants in the wall planters on one side. This is very upsetting and costly to the group. Any one with any information regarding this please e-mail us.
Help

Please pick up any litter you see around the village the Yorkshire In Bloom Judges will be visiting on the 18th July. If you see the judges in the village please talk to them they would love to meet you.

Fund raising

May Day saw us join in with the procession from the Silk Mill along Oldham Road – thank you to all those who gave to our ‘Bucket’ we raised over £34.
On the field we had our now famous Palm Reading and prize every time Tombola where we raised another £300 for group funds. We even sold out before the end of the day. See the pictures opposite with the winner of our superb hamper.

This month

We started our summer bedding planting on the hottest day so far this year the planters at Central Hall look wonderful. We have been helped by students from Calderdale College studying horticulture. They wanted to work in the community and they have helped with our summer planting.

We are delighted to have won more grant funding £900 from Community Foundation for Calderdale. This money is going to be used to carve a commemorative stone to be placed in the newly named Jubilee Gardens on Oldham Road.

Working Parties

Soyland in Bloom held their first working party and even got Jaggers to help with their JCB. Look out for the new planters and the rebuilt walls. Well done Soyland and keep up the good work.

Ripponden in Bloom Newsletter April 2012

What a month

Yorkshire in Bloom judges came to view the village on a wet Thursday 19th April. They were introduced to members of Ripponden in Bloom who showed them some of the work we had achieved since last year. They were amazed at all the money we raised and impressed about the garden space we look after.

The Parish Council has very kindly agreed to purchase a water butt for the group, to be placed outside of the library building to enable the group to water the railing planters more effectively and recycle water. The group has put up a display of their work in the library.

The Probationer Payback Service came and worked with us again at the beginning of the month and helped empty the compost bins and cleared more of the ivy from the walls in the car park in front of St Barts Church

The team has worked hard to brighten some grot spots in the Royd Lane car park see opposite.

THANK YOU TO

Brian Whitaker and Jean Slim for the fabulous primroses which they donated and which Sue and her team have planted at the back of Royd Lane car park.

Thank you also to the Brownies and their leader Tracey Armitage who did a sterling job litter picking before the judges arrived.

Everyone’s help is vital

Welcome
To our new minute secretary Pam Lum who has kindly agreed to join our committee. Thank you Pam.
